Use
Sunscreen
Every day is an important step to protect the skin from
ultraviolet light
(UV) dangerous. However, from here, the question arises about whether the habit of using sunscreen every day makes someone lack
Vitamin D.
?
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in maintaining bone strength, supports the immune system, and helps the nervous system send signals throughout the body.Exposure to sunlight is one of the main sources of vitamin D.
A dermatologist from Westlake Dermatology Kellie Reed said, UVB rays from the sun exposure can trigger a reaction to a skin protein called 7-dehydroxylesterol (7-DHC), which then produces vitamin D3, an active form of vitamin D.
Although useful, excessive exposure to UV rays can also be dangerous. One of them can increase the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, the use of sunscreen is highly recommended.
So, can the body lose the ability to produce vitamin D if sunscreen blocks UVB exposure?
The answer, no.Although sunscreen is formulated to prevent UVB rays, experts say that its use does not really stop the process of production of vitamin D on the skin.
“Sunscreen does not have a significant impact on vitamin D levels,” said radiation oncologist at Alpha Tau Medical, Robert Den, quoting
Health
.
He added that a number of studies have shown there is no direct link between the use of sunscreen and vitamin D deficiency. Sunscreen with SPF 30 Even though it makes a small portion of light can still reach the skin. This amount is enough to stimulate the production of vitamin D.
Besides, according to Den, many people use sunscreen in less ideal doses.According to him, as many as 2 tablespoons of sunscreen (HR) sunscreen needs to be applied to the whole body every day and repeated every two hours.
“In practice, the majority of people apply too little and do not routinely repeat it,” he said.
As a result, sun exposure often occurs without realizing it.For example when walking out of the house, opening the window, or in and out of the vehicle. This moment is an opportunity for the body to remain exposed to UVB rays that encourage the production of vitamin D.
How many vitamin D can be obtained from sunlight?
The amount of vitamin D absorbed from sunlight is very dependent on various factors, ranging from age, skin color, clothing, time of activity outdoors, to weather conditions and air pollution.
Darker skinned people tend to take longer to produce the same vitamin D compared to brighter -skinned people.Similarly, the elderly or those who often wear closed clothes.
Research shows that the most optimal time to obtain vitamin D from the sun is around noon, when UVB rays are strong, which is between 10 am to 4 pm.
Also complete the intake of vitamin D from other sources such as food and supplements.
