Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Washington on Monday (18/8) to meet the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump.This visit followed the peak meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin which occurred on Friday (8/15).
When Trump and Putin met, European leaders and Zelensky were not involved.
After meeting Putin, Trump canceled his pressure for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.Previously he encouraged it to resolve the conflict that had been more than three years after the Russian invasion began.
The meeting of Trump and Putin did not produce a breakthrough.Leaving aside the ceasefire allegedly would benefit Putin who had long been fighting for negotiations to reach a peaceful agreement.
Ukraine and its allies in Europe have criticized Putin’s attitude as a way to buy time and suppress Russia’s progress on the battlefield.
The leaders who headed for Washington on Monday to try to persuade Trump regarding this issue included German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen.
Ahead of the visit, Von Der Leyen said in X that he would welcome Zelensky for a meeting in Brussels on Sunday, which will be followed by other European leaders through a video conference, before accompanying the Ukraine leader in his trip to the US.
The German government, who confirmed the departure of Merz, said it would try to emphasize “interests in a rapid peace agreement in Ukraine”.
Trump has given a briefing to Zelensky and European leaders on his flight back from Alaska to Washington, and after that all parties have decided that the best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is by going straight to the peace agreement that will end the war “.
The ceasefire agreement “often cannot be maintained,” Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social.
But Zelensky seemed unsure of the change in direction and said on Saturday that it was “to complicate the situation”.
If Russia does not have a willingness to carry out simple orders to stop attacks, it may take a huge effort to make Russia have the will to apply (something) that is far greater – living peacefully with its neighboring countries for decades, “Zelensky said on social media.
European leaders themselves have expressed their concern for Trump’s approach to Putin from the start.
