National Agency of Drug and Food Control
United States of America
(US Food and Drug Administration/FDA) prohibits people from consuming, buying, and selling products
shrimp
Frozen imported from Indonesia was allegedly contaminated with radioactive isotopes, Cesium-137.
Through notification from its official website, the FDA stated that he was investigating the Cesium-137 (CS-137) contamination report on the delivery container and frozen shrimp products processed by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) from Indonesia.
The FDA said this warning applies to raw frozen shrimp products brand Great Value originating from BMS Foods retail networks. He urged consumers who have bought the product to immediately throw it away and ask distributors and sellers to stop selling on the market.
The FDA received a report from the US Customs and Excise and Protection of the Border (CBP) regarding the findings of CS-137 in four ports namely Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami.
FDA then took a number of samples for radionuclear analysis and the results confirmed the existence of CS-137 on one of the samples of frozen shrimp with flour
(Breaded Shrimp)
.All containers and products that are proven positive or indicated CS-137 are rejected entry into the US.
Although until now there has not been detected that there are contaminated products on the market, the FDA assesses that shrimp products from this BMS Foods network are “appear to be produced, packaged, or stored in unhygienic conditions so that they have the potential to be exposed to CS-137 and cause food safety problems.”
The FDA revealed that the large supermarket network in the US, Walmart, has received the supply of this raw frost that was imported after the first date CBP detected CS-137.However, the shipment was not indicated positively CS-137.
Nevertheless, the FDA recommended that Walmart still have to withdraw related products.
The FDA then continued to coordinate with CBP to prevent contaminated products from entering the market, as well as cooperating with the Sea Food Supervisory Authority in Indonesia to trace the main causes of contamination.
FDA also asked consumers who have bought products with the description to immediately throw them away and not consume or present them.
CS-137 is a radioisotope cesium that is artificially produced through nuclear reactions.Because of its broad distribution throughout the world, the CS-137 footprint can be found in the environment, including land, food, and air.Food monitoring by FDA focuses on radioisotopes which are usually not found naturally and generally originating from human activity.
Shrimp product details
The FDA took a sampling of five shrimp products from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, including frozen shrimp flour.
The FDA laboratory ensures the existence of CS-137 on the product with a level of 68.48 BQ/kg ± 8.25 BQ/kg.The other four samples were not detected to contain CS-137, but the possibility of contamination could not be fully ruled out.
FDA emphasized that there are no products with CS-137 levels exceeding the current intervention threshold (1,200 BQ/kg).However, the levels found in flour shrimp samples are considered to have the potential to cause health problems when consumed in the long run, especially when combined with radiation exposure from the environment or medical procedures.
Withdrawal steps are carried out as an effort to reduce low -dose radiation exposure which can have an impact on health in the long run.
In response to the CBP report, the FDA on August 14, 2025 issued a new Alert Import (IA 99-51) related to chemical contamination based on Article 402 (a) (4) Food, Medicine and Federal Cosmetics Laws.
With this result, PT Bahari Makmur Sejati is included in this red warning list due to the findings of CS-137.Thus, shrimp products from the company will no longer be allowed to enter the US market until the conditions underlying the violation are resolved.
The FDA emphasized that it would continue to trace the supply chains of products processed by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, gather as much information as possible, and take further steps as needed.Additional product information will be included in this warning so available.
The products that are targeted by the investigation are the Great Value raw shrimp that are sold at Walmart outlets in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia, with details:
