) emphasizes the importance of Indonesian authorities and authorities to prioritize dialogue in responding
demonstration

Spokesperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights/OHCHR), Ravina Shamdasani, said that his party monitored the current situation related to demonstrations in Indonesia, which was also colored by violence to cause deaths.
“We carefully follow the series of violence that occurred in Indonesia in the context of a national scale demonstration. We emphasize the importance of dialogue to answer public aspirations,” Shamdasani said in his statement to

Shamdasani stated that Ohchr monitored demonstrations that occurred in Indonesia over the past few days.
Ohchr also observed a series of violence including “alleged use of unnecessary or disproportionate forces by security forces.”
“The authorities must uphold the right to gather peacefully and freedom of expression while maintaining order, in accordance with international norms and standards, related to the supervision of public associations,” said Shamdasani.
“All security forces, including the military, when mobilized in law enforcement capacity must comply with basic principles regarding the use of strength and firearms by law enforcement officials,” he continued.
Along with this, OHCHR called for a rapid, comprehensive, and transparent investigation of all alleged violations of international human rights (HAM), including those relating to the use of strength.
“It is also important to understand that the media is permitted to report events freely and independently,” concluded Shamdasani.
Demonstrations broke out in various cities in Indonesia for several days since last week.This demonstration was originally triggered by the high salaries and benefits of members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) in the midst of the difficulty of the Indonesian economy.
The demonstration then expanded after an online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan was killed because it was crushed by a Brimob tactical vehicle (Rantis) on August 28.In some areas, demonstrations ended in hot until a number of residents died.
As of September 1, the police arrested 3,195 people in a demonstration that took place in a number of regions in Indonesia.So far, the death toll during the demonstration took place in Indonesia which had been confirmed to have increased to eight people.

Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid through his social media account denied that there was a ban on demo coverage.He emphasized that the ban was hoaks and the government had never prohibited coverage.
Regarding Tiktok, on a separate occasion, Meutya also stated that the closing of the feature was a voluntary decision of Tiktok.
