While killed while one other member was injured, after being shot by an armed man in a rural property in the state of Victoria on Tuesday (26/8).The perpetrators ran away after carrying out the action.
Victoria police chief, Mike Bush, said 10 police arrived at a property in Porepunkah, 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne at around 10:30 local time.But upon arrival at the location, they were immediately greeted by shots.
The police came to the property to submit an arrest warrant related to alleged sexual harassment cases, when suddenly ambushed.
The perpetrators then fled with a number of family members, including children.
Two police officers were killed at the location, while the other one suffered serious injuries and is now being treated at the hospital.
“We have mobilized all special resources to the region to arrest the perpetrators. Detectives and special operating groups are currently in the location of this person,” Bush said.
“We will do everything possible so that the perpetrators can be captured so that people feel safe again,” he added, reported by Reuters.
According to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the police believe the perpetrators are a “Sovereign Citizen” or residents who do not recognize the validity of the government.
Porepunkah, a small town with a population of about 1,000 people at the foot of the Australian Alps, is now in a vigilant situation.
“This is a day of sorrow and surprise for our community. We expressed their deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of two police who died tragically in Porepunkah,” said Mayor Sarah Nicholas in his statement.
The city government closed a number of public facilities, including libraries, information centers, to further notice.
Principal of Porepunkah Primary School, Jill Gillies, said that around 90 students had been grabbed starting at 11:30 in the morning.Lockdown is then revoked after the situation is considered safer.
The local airport was also closed due to an ongoing emergency response.
