Two
comet
The newly discovered light will pass Earth at its closest distance in October 2025. This rare phenomenon provides a rare opportunity for skywatchers to see the amazing sight at night.
The two comets are C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN).Both were discovered by a team of astronomers at different times and are currently traversing the inner solar system.

, Friday (10/10), comet SWAN was discovered on September 10 2025 by an amateur astronomer from Ukraine, Vladimir Bezugly, through images from the SWAN instrument on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency.
Meanwhile, Lemmon’s comet was detected first, on January 3, 2025, by the Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona in the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey project.
According to astronomers, Comet SWAN will reach its closest distance to Earth on October 20 2025, a distance of 38.6 million kilometers.
Meanwhile, Comet Lemmon will be closest to Earth on October 21 2025, at a distance of 88.5 million kilometers.
These comets have long-term elliptical orbits and will only pass near Earth once every hundreds of years.SWAN will only return in 650 to 700 years, while Lemmon will take 1,300 years to return across the same orbit.
How to See It?
According to astronomer Quanzhi Ye from the University of Maryland Comet SWAN can only be observed early in the evening, as soon as the sky is dark.
“SWAN can only be observed in the afternoon, right after the sky darkens,” said Quanzhi Ye, a senior researcher in the University of Maryland’s astronomy department.
“Meanwhile, Lemmon can be seen just before sunrise, but will soon be visible in the afternoon and only in the afternoon,” he continued.
Both can only be observed for a limited time each day because they appear close to the sun when viewed from Earth.Lemmon is visible in the northern hemisphere, while SWAN is clearer from the southern hemisphere, but is now also starting to be visible in the north.
Experts recommend that observations be made using binoculars or a cellphone camera with a long exposure setting, from a dark place with minimal light pollution.
Planetarium apps such as Stellarium and KStars can help track comet positions in real time.Currently, Lemmon’s comet is under the Big Dipper constellation.
According to Carrie Holt from the Las Cumbres Observatory, these two comets came from the Oort Cloud, the outermost region of the solar system full of icy objects. As they approach the sun, their icy surfaces begin to sublimate and form their characteristic bright tails.
“This is a rare moment to see ancient material that has remained almost unchanged since the beginning of the solar system,” Holt said.
Comet Lemmon is expected to get brighter and be visible to the naked eye from dark locations in the next few weeks.According to experts, Lemmon is one of the best comets of the year to observe from Earth.
For those who cannot observe directly, The Virtual Telescope project will broadcast a live broadcast of observations of the two comets on October 20 2025 from the dark sky in Manciano, Italy.
