Donald Trump
blamed the government shutdown as the cause of the Republican Party’s defeat in the US general election on Tuesday (4/1).
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that the government shutdown and his absence from the ballot had caused the Republicans to lose to the Democrats.
“Trump is not on the ballot and the (government) shutdown are two reasons the Republican Party lost tonight’s election, according to pollsters,” Trump wrote on his social media, Tuesday (4/11) evening.

Trump did not specify which pollster he was referring to.He also has not commented directly on the victory of Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral election.
On Tuesday night, Mamdani won the New York mayoral election after capturing 50.5 percent of the vote out of 85 percent of the votes cast according to calculations by The Associated Press (AP).
Mamdani defeated independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.The 34-year-old man will now become New York’s youngest mayor as well as the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Apart from New York, the Democratic Party also won the gubernatorial election in the state of Virginia.
Abigail Spanberger succeeded in ousting her Republican rival, Winsome Earle-Sears, with 56.9 percent of the vote.Spanberger became Virginia’s first female governor.
In the state of New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill is also ahead of Republican Jack Ciattarelli.Sherrill pocketed 56 percent of the vote over Ciattarelli with 43.4 percent of the vote.
In Virginia’s election for attorney general, Democratic candidate Jay Jones is also ahead of his opponent, Republican Jason Miyares.Jones’ vote share reached 52.4 percent, while Miyares 47.2 percent, as quoted from

The US election was held in the midst of a government shutdown that has lasted for more than a month.Shutdown is a condition when some federal government agencies have to stop operating because Congress fails to approve a spending budget.
Votes on spending bills repeatedly failed to pass because Democrats insisted that the passed budget include health subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year.
At least 670,000 federal employees have been furloughed in the wake of the shutdown.Meanwhile, around 730,000 employees are currently working without pay.
