Southwest Airlines announced a new policy that requires
airplane passengers
Which requires more space to buy additional seats since the beginning of the ticket booking.
The airline rule from the United States (US) will take effect on January 27, 2026 and mark a significant shift from the previous policy.
Previously, large passengers could buy additional seats and submit a refund after flight or get it for free at the airport.However, with this new regulation, the option is no longer available and the refund is not guaranteed.
“To ensure the availability of places, we communicate to customers who have previously used additional seat policies that they must buy it when ordering,” said the official statement of Southwest Airlines, as quoted

This policy also coincides with other major changes, namely the elimination of the free system of selecting seats.
Global Impact and Trends
This change is part of the Southwest Airlines effort to change its image, having previously been known as a unique policy such as free luggage.The free baggage policy itself has officially ended last May.
In the latest rule, refunds for additional seats remain possible, but only if the flight is not full during departure and both tickets are purchased in the same order class.Passengers are also required to submit a refund within 90 days after the flight.
If passengers who need additional seats do not buy it at the beginning, they can still do it at the airport.However, if the flight is full, they will be rescheduled to the next flight.
This Southwest Airlines step is in line with the global trend in which low -cost airlines face regulatory pressure.
In Europe, the European Union adopted a proposal that required the airline to allow passengers to carry cabin bags and personal goods up to seven kilograms for free.Brussel also encourages airlines to be more transparent by displaying total travel costs since the beginning of the order.
Although aimed at creating a more fair system, experts warn that this new policy can encourage airlines to find other sources of income, including raising tariffs or increasing additional costs.
