A shocking study in the Bird Head Landscape Region, Southwest Papua, revealed that 62 percent

found there has injuries due to human activity.
This finding highlights a serious threat from fishing nets, tourist boats, and charts, traditional fishing structures.
According to Dr.Edy Setyawan, the main scientist from the Elasmobranch Institute of Indonesia, most of the wounds can actually be prevented.
“The wounds were mostly caused by collisions with bagang, traditional fishing gear, and whale shark tourist boat,” explained Edy Setiawan, as reported

, Wednesday (9/17).
Studies conducted between 2010 and 2023 in four main locations, Cenderawasih Bay, Kaimana, Raja Ampat, and Fakfak, documented 268 individual whale sharks.
Of that number, 206 whale sharks include wounds, and more than 80 percent of the wounds are caused by humans.
Light wounds of whale sharks such as the most common abrasion are found, but severe injuries such as amputation are also found, although the case is fairly rare.
Interestingly, more than half of the whale shark that was observed re -appeared in the same location, showing this area is an important habitat for them.
Young and male whale sharks tend to be more often in shallow waters, which make them vulnerable to collisions with boats and fish nets.Conversely, adult whale sharks, especially females, are more often in the deep sea.
Seeing the increasing risk of injury to whale sharks, researchers are now collaborating with the manager of the sea conservation area. They are compiling rules that require simple modifications to charts and boats, such as eliminating sharp parts of the net and cadik.
Dr.Mark Erdmann, Director of Shark Conservation in Rewild Organization, is optimistic that this small change can make a big difference.”We believe this simple change can significantly reduce wounds on whale sharks,” he said.
This step is expected to protect the whale shark population and ensure the survival of this iconic species in Indonesian waters.
