, Sunday (8/31), two of the four plaintiffs, Asmania and Arif Pujianto, have arrived in Switzerland to attend the initial trial that will determine whether the lawsuit is feasible to be continued to the full trial stage.
They demanded compensation of 3,600 Swiss francs (around Rp. 74 million) per person for damage and support for environmental protection efforts such as planting mangroves and the construction of the waves.
This case was the first to be proposed by Indonesian citizens against foreign companies for climate damage, as well as being the first climate suit against large cement companies in the world.
Holcim stressed that they were committed to climate actions, but stated that the allocation of carbon emissions should be determined by the government, not a civil court.
Cement production is known to contribute around 8 percent of global carbon emissions.Holcim is referred to as one of the 100 largest CO2 emission -producing companies in the world, with a contribution of 0.42 percent to global industry emissions since 1750.
Asmania, one of the plaintiffs who lost seaweed ponds due to tidal floods, hoped that this case could be an inspiration for victims of climate crisis throughout the world.
While Arif revealed that the tidal flood had eroded the beach where he worked and damaged his workshop equipment.
In addition to compensation, the plaintiffs also demanded Holcim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent in 2030 and 69 percent in 2040, according to the Paris agreement target to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
This trial is seen as an important momentum in the global environmental law movement, especially in demanding corporate accountability for the impact of the climate crisis felt by countries in southern global.
