, on Saturday (6/9).
Jayapura Regency Search and Relief Office (SAR), Papua Province, announced the team had found a sinking victim after being struck by lightning while fishing.
Jayapura SAR Office Chief Anton Sucipto through a release on Sunday (7/9) said the previous victim was fishing in a boat before finally being struck by lightning and fell into the lake.
“Based on witness testimony, when heavy rain accompanied by lightning, the victim was struck and then fell from the boat around 16.00 CET, and immediately sank in the waters of Lake Sentani,” he said.
According to Anton, the family had tried to find the victim but did not produce results so that it reported the incident to the Jayapura SAR office for joint search efforts.
“We immediately moved with water SAR equipment and started diving at 17:40 CET, but the results were zero because of the dark night situation,” he said.
He explained, the search resumed on Sunday morning with the distribution of three diving teams consisting of SAR Jayapura personnel, Polair, and assistance from the local community.
“We dropped ten personnel divided into three teams to search, both on the surface of the water and diving around the victim’s sinking location,” he said again.
He added, the search effort finally paid off after the victim was found dead at around 3:10 pm at the victim’s location, then evacuated to land.
“The victim was immediately handed over to the family and with the discovery of the victim, the SAR operation was declared officially closed today,” he said.
