Ceasefire
trade war
United States-China is extended again 90 days after the US President
Donald Trump
sign the executive command.
The order of extension was signed by Trump ahead of the first ceasefire ended today (12/8).
“We’ll see. They have transacted quite well. The relationship is very good with President XI (Jinping) and myself,” Trump said when asked the possibility of extending the time limit, quoted
Reuters,
Monday (11/8)
The order prevents US tariffs on Chinese goods soaring up to 145 percent, while China tariffs on US goods are determined to reach 125 percent, the tariff that will result in virtual trade embargo.
This makes imports from China currently subject to a tariff of 30 percent, including a 10 percent basic tariff and a 20 percent -related tariff that was imposed by Washington in February and March 2025.
China has also match the tariff reduction, reduced its tariffs for US imports to 10 percent.
Both sides in May 2025 announced the ceasefire of a trade war after negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, by agreeing on the 90 -day period to enable further negotiations.
They met again at Stockholm, Sweden at the end of July 2025, but did not announce an agreement to extend the further time limit.
The White House refused to comment further after Trump’s latest statement. The Ministry of Finance and the US Commercial Representative Office did not respond to requests for comments.
US Finance Minister Scott Besent said Washington had the basis of agreement with China and he was “optimistic” about the way forward.
Trump encouraged additional concessions on Sunday (10/8), urged China to multiply the purchase of soybeans, although analysts questioned the feasibility of such an agreement.
Trump did not repeat his demands on Monday. However, Washington has also urged Beijing to stop buying Russian oil, with Trump threatening to impose secondary tariffs on China.
