Based on research involving 1,000 respondents in the United States (US), it was revealed that the level of public skepticism of the visual content of “too perfect” travel is now increasing.
Although charming photos managed to motivate three of four people to plan a trip, the motivation was accompanied by doubt.
As many as 75 percent of respondents expressed their distrust of destinations or accommodations that only display photos of excessive curation and polish.
This condition encourages almost two thirds of respondents to find more authentic visual references. They tend to choose photos uploaded by ordinary users on various platforms, such as Google Maps, Airbnb, and TripAdvisor, to get a real picture of a place.
The study also recorded the disappointment experienced by travelers. As many as 39 percent of respondents claimed to have felt cheated because the reality on the ground was not in accordance with the expectations formed by the photo.
As a result, 32 percent of them consider shortening the holidays, and 10 percent really go home earlier.
Generation Z became the most vulnerable group, with 53 percent feeling misled and 18 percent decided to leave the destination.
In addition, advances in artificial intelligence technology (AI) also contribute to this distrust. As many as 83 percent of respondents expressed fears that AI will make travel photos increasingly unreliable, and only 6 percent are confident.
