Infection
Covid-19
proven to cause changes in
sperm
mice which have a nuisance effect
mental health
in the form of increased anxiety in children born to those who have been infected.
This was stated in a study by the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health in Melbourne, Australia. The study was published in a peer-reviewed journal
Nature Communications
.
Scientists injected Covid-19 into male mice. Then, the mice were mated with female mice.

“We found that offspring [rat offspring] produced [from male mice infected with the Covid-19 virus] showed more anxious behavior compared to offspring [rat offspring] from uninfected fathers,” said the study’s lead author, Elizabeth Kleeman, as reported by
AFP
, Saturday (11/10).
All offspring or children born to mice infected with Covid-19 showed excessive anxiety.
Significant changes were also seen in the female rat pups. The activity of a number of genes in
hippocampus
, the part of the brain that regulates emotions, showed significant changes.
The researchers say their study is the first to show the impact of Covid-19 infection on the behavioral and brain development of the next generation.
The virus was found to change the RNA molecules in the sperm of male mice.
“These findings suggest the Covid-19 pandemic could have long-term effects on future generations,” said Anthony Hannan, the study’s lead researcher.
However, a similar impact on humans cannot be confirmed.Further research is needed to confirm this suspicion.
“If our findings are applied to humans, they could impact millions of children worldwide, and their families, with major implications for public health,” Hannan said.
The Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020. Around 7 million people died in that incident. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the death toll was likely to be higher than that record.
Several studies have shown the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health. For example, the findings show that children have not yet overcome the learning gaps caused by disruptions to their education in the pandemic era.
The friend comes from a review of about 40 studies in 15 countries, published in peer-reviewed journals
Nature Human Behaviour
in 2023.
