Unable to work optimally, the body loses the ability to get rid of toxins and excess fluid.
One of the main therapies used to help patients survive is hemodialysis.
Hemodialysis or HD, often known as “dialysis”.This is a medical procedure carried out by flowing the patient’s blood out of the body, cleaning it through a special tool called dialyzer, then returning it again to the body.

This process usually lasts 3-4 hours and is done three times a week.
“Although it is not a permanent solution, hemodialysis is an important life support for patients with final stage kidney failure,” said a doctor of kidney-hipertension consultants at Bethaida Hospital Gading Serpong, Mutalib Abdullah in a written statement, Monday (29/9).
Muthalib explained, in this procedure, the patient’s blood flowed through a hose to the dialysis machine.Inside the machine, blood passes through a special membrane that functions like an artificial kidney.
Metabolic waste, excess fluids, and filtered poisons, while clean blood is returned to the patient’s body.
This process helps maintain electrolyte balance, prevent fluid buildup, and reduce the risk of complications such as shortness of breath or high blood pressure.
Impact on patients
Patients who undergo hemodialysis can feel improvement in the quality of life, although this procedure is quite time and energy.
“HD does help patients, but discipline is very important. Patients must follow the schedule regularly so that the results are optimal,” Muthalib explained.
In addition, patients still need to maintain diet, limit fluid intake, and regular health check.Hemodialysis is not the end of the trip, but part of a long effort to keep the body function properly.
As medical technology develops, hemodialysis procedures also continue to increase. However, equitable access and patient education are still a challenge in many regions.
For patients with chronic kidney failure, hemodialysis gives hope to continue to live, while waiting for other more definitive therapies such as kidney transplants.
“This therapy is not just dialysis, but a bridge for patients to be able to move and maintain the quality of life,” concluded Muthalib.
