Zohran Mamdani
won the mayoral election

, on Tuesday (4/11).
The voting results broadcast by The Associated Press showed Mamdani received 50.5 percent of the vote out of 85 percent of the votes cast.
Mamdani defeated independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.Mamdani will now replace incumbent Mayor Eric Adams who withdrew from the contest last September.

Zohran Kwame Mamdani is a 34 year old democratic socialist.He will be the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century.
Mamdani was born on 18 October 1991 in Kampala, Uganda.He is the son of Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and Indian film producer Mira Nair.
When he was 7 years old, he and his family moved to New York.Mamdani later earned a bachelor’s degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College in Maine.Earlier this year, Mamdani married Brooklyn-based Syrian artist Rama Duwaji.
Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counselor, helping lower income families and helping prevent evictions.
Mamdani has become one of the vocal figures in criticizing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.In October 2024, he said that the country led by Benjamin Netanyahu had committed genocide.
Mamdani also admitted that he was ready to arrest Netanyahu if the Prime Minister visited New York and he was mayor.He also supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement for products affiliated with Israel.
As a Muslim who grew up after 9/11, Mamdani said he was familiar with Arabic words being twisted and used to justify all kinds of meanings.
According to him, the globalization slogan of the intifada is a call for solidarity with oppressed people throughout the world, not for violence.
During the campaign, he promised to make New York a welcoming city for working-class people.One of them is by making all buses in the city free by 2027.
Mamdani is also a politician who is vocal in his support for Palestine, which helped make him the strongest candidate for mayor during the elections.
Mamdani’s outspoken support for Palestinian rights over the past few years has also become a “strengthening” issue for his campaign.
Mamdani also has a program on housing by proposing a rent freeze for all rent-stabilized apartments.Mamdani plans to establish a Social Housing Development Agency that will build affordable public housing.
Apart from that, he proposed opening one local government-owned grocery store in each region in a place quite far from business or commercial centers.Mamdani also promised to expand free meal programs in public schools and offer child care programs.
