President
Prabowo Subianto
Not attending warnings
ASEAN
58 or ASEAN Day at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, today, Friday (8/8).He was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sugiono
.
When giving a speech at the event, Sugiono conveyed an apology because Prabowo could not attend.
“First of all I want to convey the sense of regret of President Prabowo Subianto because it cannot be present here with us in the 58th ASEAN Day celebration,” Sugiono said.
The 58th ASEAN Day committee had previously invited Prabowo to attend the event. However, he could not attend and appoint Sugiono to replace him.
In the speech, Sugiono alluded to ASEAN’s establishment.According to him, this organization was born in a difficult situation that was when the cold war raged.
“And then from that simple start, ASEAN has become a family consisting of ten countries, and will be eleven when Timor-Leste joins,” he said.
ASEAN, continued Sugiono, is now the center of regional integration, supply chains, and truly stabilizers in the region. With more than 675 million population and gross domestic product (GDP) of almost US $ 4 trillion, this region is the fifth largest economy in the world.
However, this achievement does not mean anything if ASEAN member countries are not united. He then called on all members to keep the principles of the principle that had been guidelines for the organization.
ASEAN member countries, he said, must work together to overcome the challenges that exist by strengthening regional economic cooperation, digital transformation, and overcoming the transnational threat of human trafficking.
“All of this will not happen without ASEAN united,” said Sugiono.
On that occasion, the Indonesian Foreign Minister also reminded the matter of the vision of Adam Malik, one of the founders of ASEAN, who stated that the organization must be independent, and free from external coercion amid competition in the global economic fragmentation and weakened international law.
To deal with this, he continued, ASEAN must strengthen the determination to remain neutral and credible, instead of being ruled out and divided.
