Further handling is carried out the next day starting from body measurements, sampling of fins and gills, as well as whale shark burial in the mangrove area as deep as 1 meter with a excavation length of 6 meters.
“Based on the report of the Jaya Bahari Sea Bahari Sea Bahari Community Group (Pokmaswas), Tuesday, September 30, 2025, about the whale shark stranded in Muara Mati Ali, Pantai Bahagia Village, Muara Gembong,” said Dyah Ayu Purwaningsih, Head of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office of West Java on Thursday (2/10), quoted from Instagram WWF-Indonesia.
“The West Java Maritime and Fisheries Service, as a quick response to public complaints, collaborates with WWF-Indonesia to be able to help handle whale sharks,” he continued.
The village community of Bahagia Pantai is said to have full awareness that whale sharks are protected animals and should not be consumed.
The village community emphasized that they had never consumed the giant shark. For them, whale sharks are not just big fish, but a helper for fishermen in the sea.
In addition to believing the whale shark is a helper of fishermen, they also believe that cutting or eating it can bring disaster. Therefore, the whale shark is buried in full with a shroud as a form of respect.
“Whale or Rhincodon Typus sharks are a type of shark that is included as a mega fauna with full protection status based on the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Decree Number 18 of 2013, so that a part to its derivative products should not be used as an effort to preserve the biota,” said Fitrian Dwi Cahyo, Chair of the Protection and Preservation Team of LPSPL Serang.
“Therefore, the stranded whale shark biota must be handled quickly, one of which is by being buried,” he added.
Furthermore, the local wisdom of the village community is a tangible manifestation of the respect for the sea and protected animals, as well as a reminder that the sustainability of the sea is also born from the culture and traditions of coastal communities.
Ahmad Qurtubi, Secretary of Pantai Bahagia Village, said the shark was found dead when fishermen were found not far from the shoreline.
He revealed the discovery of the full protected marine animal was first reported by a local fisherman named Rohani (42) while he was looking for fish using traditional fishing gear.
“When he was combing with a sero (fishing gear), he found the fish into the sero was dead,” Ahmad said, launching Antara, Tuesday (9/30).
Because of the large fish size, Rohani asked for the help of his friends to evacuate the fish carcass from his fishing gear.
“He was confused about how to remove such a big fish, then he called his friends to help evacuate,” he said.
The evacuation process is carried out by pulling the carcass of the shark to the mainland. From the results of the interim examination, no wounds were found in the body of the fish.
“If I see, there are no scars on his body. It is not yet clear because of the death of fish,” he said.
