The police accused dozens of arrested pedemo were provocateurs that triggered chaotic demonstrations.
“The police secured 39 people suspected of being provocateurs and anarchists, consisting of 15 students and 24 non-student,” said North Sumatra Police Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Pol Ferry Walintukan.
He mentioned that the action held by the masses initially went in an orderly manner.However, Ferry claimed the demonstration began to heat up after a group of masses knocked down the North Sumatra DPRD gate fence.
“Not only that the masses also throwing stones, drink bottles and firecrackers towards the officers,” he said.
To prevent riots more widespread, Ferry explained the authorities act decisively.But he claimed that the apparatus continued to prioritize the persuasive principle by capturing the masses suspected of being provocateurs and who carried out anarchist actions.
“Dozens of people were taken to the North Sumatra Regional Police Directorate General Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimum) for examination in accordance with applicable legal provisions,” he explained.
Ferry emphasized that the security measures were a form of police responsibility in maintaining security stability.
“We respect the right to express opinions in public, but if the action is carried out by anarchist ways to damage the facilities and injure officers, the authorities are required to act,” he said.
Until around 19:00 WIB, the conditions around the North Sumatra DPRD building had gradually been conducive.The combined apparatus from the North Sumatra Regional Police and Medan Polrestabes are still on standby to ensure safety and prevent riots from recurring.
