Democratic candidate Ghazala Hashmi wins election for lieutenant governor of the state of Virginia,

She will be the first Muslim woman to hold the position in Virginia.

, Hashmi received 55.6 percent of the votes from 96.5 percent of the votes cast.He led the top position defeating Republican John Reid.
Hashmi became the first Muslim elected lieutenant governor in Virginia.He also became the first Indian American in Virginia to hold the position.
During the campaign, Hashmi promised to oppose President Donald Trump’s government which he considered not inclusive.The 61-year-old woman admitted that she deliberately ran for office in response to the Trump administration’s efforts to target marginalized communities.

Before entering politics, Hashmi worked as a lecturer at various Virginia universities.His father was also a lecturer who taught at Georgia Southern University in Savannah when he was little.
In an interview in 2020, Hashmi said he faced a turning point when he saw how Muslims in the US were treated under the first term of the Trump administration.In 2019, he finally ran for a seat in the Virginia Senate, which was then held by a Republican.
Surprisingly, Hashmi managed to win the seat and became the first Muslim woman in the Virginia State Senate.
Virginia is one of 17 states where the lieutenant governor is elected separately from the governor.
Lieutenant governors, including Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, have used the position as a springboard to run for governor in states that prohibit governors from serving consecutively.
Hashmi’s victory occurred on the same day as the victory for New York mayoral candidate from the Democratic Party, Zohran Mamdani.Just like Hashmi, Mamdani is also the first Muslim to serve as mayor of New York.
