But is it true that eggs make cholesterol rise?
Cholesterol is actually needed by the body to form hormones, vitamin D, and help digest fat. There are two main types of cholesterol, namely LDL (low-density lipoprotein) which is known as ‘bad’ cholesterol, and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or ‘good’ cholesterol.
“LDL can accumulate in the blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, while HDL actually helps clear LDL from the bloodstream,” explained Khushma Shah, a clinical nutritionist citing
Health shots
.
“Our bodies do produce cholesterol naturally, but foods such as meat, cheese and egg yolks can also increase cholesterol intake. So, the key is not to avoid it completely, but to maintain a balance between LDL and HDL,” he added.
How much cholesterol is in eggs?
One large egg contains about 186 milligrams of cholesterol, most of which is found in the yolk. For years, this number has worried many people.
A study from North Western University, Chicago, stated that consuming half an egg per day can slightly increase the risk of heart disease and death.
However, more recent research shows that dietary cholesterol does not always have a direct impact on blood cholesterol levels. This is because the human liver will adjust its cholesterol production depending on the incoming intake.
So, is the cholesterol in eggs dangerous?
According to Harvard Health Publishing, the main source of cholesterol in the blood comes from the liver, not from food. What has a greater influence on cholesterol levels is saturated fat and trans fat which are found in butter, processed meat and fast food.
In other words, how to process and combine eggs is much more important than the number of eggs themselves.Boiled eggs with whole wheat toast and avocado are certainly healthier than fried eggs cooked in butter and served with bacon.
If so, is it OK to eat eggs every day?
Yes, as long as it is in reasonable amounts and consumed by healthy individuals.
A large study from the Journal of Heart in 2018 in China involving nearly half a million adults found that those who ate one egg every day actually had a lower risk of heart disease and stroke than those who rarely consumed them.
Apart from that, eggs also contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are good for eye health and can reduce inflammation.
