Since becoming US president, Trump has launched a series of measures to expel immigrants from the US.Immigrants in various parts of the US were arrested, including those living in New York.
New York itself is the city with the most immigrants in the United States. Therefore, most New Yorkers strongly oppose Trump’s immigration operations.
In the same speech, Mamdani gave a message to Trump not to mess with the people of New York. The reason is, he and all the residents will stand shoulder to shoulder to protect the city.
“Listen to me, President Trump. If you want to get past one of us, you have to get past all of us,” he said.
Mamdani emphasized that as the new mayor, he will hold landlords accountable who charge super expensive rates to the point of making it difficult for the people, especially the working class, who are generally immigrants.
He vowed to end the culture of corruption “that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxes and exploit tax breaks.”
“We will stand with unions and expand labor protections. Because we know, as Donald Trump does, that when workers have the strongest rights, the bosses who try to extort them are weakened,” he said.
he then continued, “New York remains a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, supported by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by immigrants.”
Mamdani won the election for mayor of New York after capturing 50.5 percent of the vote out of 85 percent of the votes cast based on calculations by The Associated Press (AP).
Mamdani defeated independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The 34-year-old man will now become New York’s youngest mayor as well as the city’s first Muslim mayor.
During the campaign, Mamdani promised to make New York a city friendly to working class people. One of them is by making all buses in the city free by 2027.
Mamdani also has a program on housing by proposing a rent freeze for all rent-stabilized apartments.Mamdani plans to establish a Social Housing Development Agency that will build affordable public housing.
In addition, he proposed opening one regional government-owned grocery store in each region in a place quite far from business or commercial centers.Mamdani also promised to expand free meal programs in public schools and offer child care programs.
