According to a New York Times report, the reasons for the dismissal of the eight judges in New York are not yet clear. However, they were among about 90 judges removed during the year across the state out of a total of about 600 judges.
According to migrant advocacy groups, these dismissals were carried out to replace judges who were not in line with the administration’s immigration policies.
The firings came after dozens of people gathered in Manhattan over the weekend.
They prevent possible raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) on street vendors.New York police made several arrests.
According to the National Association of Immigration Judges (NAIJ), which confirmed media reports, the eight judges work at 25 Federal Plaza in Manhattan.
The location is where the court handles cases of migrants trying to regularize their status.
For months, federal officers wearing masks have patrolled daily the hallways of the Jacob K Javitz Federal Building.
They arrested migrants as they left the courtroom, but the activity took place under the almost constant scrutiny of the media.
Photos of clashes with police and the separation of migrant families spread widely around the world, making 26 Federal Plaza a symbolic location of the Trump administration’s tightening of migrant policies.
As a sanctuary city for migrants, New York has voluntarily reduced the level of cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration agencies. However, the restrictions do not hinder federal operations.
