Gen Z
It is already familiar with the term adulting.Chat about installments, burnout work, to “old” sense in the 20s milling about social media.
Not a few who feel that youth is now shorter, as if the transition to the world of adults comes faster than the previous generation.
This phenomenon raises the impression that the Z gene is far more mature than its age.
In fact, according to experts, what they experience is actually not new.The previous generation also faced a time full of similar confusion, only the way to express it was different.
Psychologist from Tabula Rasa, Arnold Lukito, explained that there were a number of factors that made the Z gene look more mature than the millennial in his time.
The following explanation:
1. Technology and media exposure
Gen Z grows in the era of technology with heavy access to information.Social media accelerates their presentation on adult issues such as financial, political, and relations.
“Teenagers now tend to feel ‘mature’ faster because they see, compare, and imitate the lifestyle of adults continuously. This process is known as observational learning,” Arnold told cartitleloansIndonesia.com, Monday (9/15).
Research also shows that exposure to “adult” content on social media is related to the level of maturity that is felt higher.
2. Brain and neurocognitive factors
Biologically, the human brain, especially the prefrontal cortex, is functioning in planning and controlling newly full mature at around 25 years of age. However, the cognitive stimulation experienced by Gen Z is far more intense than the previous generation.
Massive information exposure makes them often look faster, even though neurologically the process of brain development remains the same.
3. Popular language and perception
The adulting phenomenon is actually not entirely new.According to Arnold, this term is a more popular cultural product than the concept of developmental psychology.
“Gen Z is only more expressive in complaining of life responsibilities. Millennials also experience a similar burden in their 20s, but they do not have the term slang like ‘adulting’ to name it,” he explained.
In other words, the feeling of “fast old” can also be an illusion of social media. The algorithm enlarges certain discourse, the more often the content of “adulting is hard,” the stronger the internalization that someone is “mature” or even “old”.
Not just Gen Z
Arnold reminded, what Gen Z experienced was actually not new.Millennials in the early 2000s also faced “quarter-life crisis” when they began to enter the world of work and responsibility. The difference is, they do not have social media as a massive expression space.
“Millennials who are now 30-40 years old may view their 20s full of freedom. Even though research at that time also reported the same unrest. This phenomenon repeated in every young generation when entering the transition of maturity,” Arnold said.
That is, Gen Z is not truly “faster,” but more visible because it has language, media, and public space to talk about it.
