“Mining operations have been stopped temporarily to prioritize cleaning access and evacuation paths that are safe for the seven contractor workers,” he said in an official statement, Tuesday (9/9).
He said at 22:00 CET yesterday (8/9) there was a large amount of wet material in the Grasberg Block Cave underground mines.
According to him, this incident closed access to certain areas in the mine, limiting the evacuation route for seven workers.The location of the trapped workers has been known and they are believed to be safe.
“The crew is trying to clean up access to safe and fast evacuation. At the same time, the activities of providing needs for affected workers are being carried out. All other workers are confirmed to be safe,” he added.
Tembagapura Police Chief Iptu Firman said his staff continued to coordinate with PTFI management to immediately evacuate seven employees trapped in the underground mining area.
“The information we received from PT Freeport’s internal security officers there were seven people who were trapped. It happened since last night at 22:00 CET. So far there have been no reports of casualties, hopefully everything is safe and immediately evacuated,” Firman was quoted as saying
