The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed that two astronauts from Pakistan are undergoing intensive training as part of space cooperation between Beijing and Islamabad.
Zhang Jingbo, CMSA spokesperson, said the two Pakistani astronauts were selected through a strict selection process involving physical, psychological and technical ability tests.
“Two selected Pakistani astronauts will take part in joint training with Chinese astronauts. One of them will be scheduled to carry out a short duration flight mission as a payload expert,” said Zhang, on Thursday (30/10), as reported by

.
In February this year, China and Pakistan agreed to work together to send astronauts to Tiangong.According to Zhang, the initial selection of astronauts is currently being carried out in Pakistan, and the second and final selection will be carried out in China.
“During the flight, apart from carrying out the daily duties of the flight crew, they will also carry out scientific experiments for Pakistan,” explained Zhang.
Zhang did not specify which mission the Pakistani astronauts would participate in.However, when the mission gets underway, they will occupy one of three seats on the Shenzhou spacecraft, which will be launched using a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.
The Shenzhou 22 mission is scheduled to launch in about six months, with a crew that will replace the Shenzhou 21 astronauts currently serving on the Tiangong space station.Meanwhile, Shenzhou 23 is planned to launch about a year from now.
Although CMSA has not revealed exact details of the mission, the short duration of the visit indicates that the Pakistani astronaut will likely join two Chinese astronauts on the Shenzhou spacecraft’s flight to Tiangong station.
They are expected to stay for several days before returning to Earth along with two of the three crew members who have completed a six-month mission in orbit.
Meanwhile, one Chinese astronaut will remain on board Tiangong to continue the mission, marking the first time China has achieved a full year’s stay on its space station, a new milestone in the country’s space exploration history.
The Tiangong Space Station is a three-module orbital station under construction and will be completed by the end of 2022. China plans to keep this space station operational and permanently inhabited for at least ten years.
This space station is estimated to be longer than the International Space Station.Pakistan is also partnering with China on China’s International Lunar Research Station project, which is planned to be built in the 2030s.
