The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F plane crashed and exploded after takeoff near Louisville airport on Tuesday at around 17.00 local time.Three crew members were on board the plane when the incident occurred.
Plumes of black smoke rose after the plane exploded, with debris flying through the air.
According to the US federal aviation agency, the plane was en route to Honolulu. The plane climbed to a height of 175 feet and reached a speed of 184 knots before making a sharp descent.
All flights around the Louisville airport are temporarily closed.
Louisville Mayor Craig GreenbergĀ said the plane was carrying 280,000 gallons of fuel at the time of the incident. He also appealed to residents to avoid the location of the incident considering the explosion and fire that had the potential to spread.
“There are many injuries and the fire is still burning. There are many road closures in the area. Please avoid the scene. The plane was carrying 280,000 gallons of fuel,” Greenberg said on social media X.
This information sparked controversy because the MD-11 aircraft was said to be able to carry 36,000 gallons of fuel, which is equivalent to about 300,000 pounds.Greenberg most likely mistakenly wrote pounds as gallons.
So far, three people have been confirmed dead and 11 people injured as a result of this incident. However, fatalities and injuries are expected to increase.
