ended in violence to make hundreds of demonstrators experience blindness in
Chile
, South America, in 2019.
In November 2019, shot from Chile’s police shotgun caused 230 people to suffer injuries to the eyes.Of the hundreds of victims, as many as 50 of them experienced permanent blindness to require prosthetic eyes.
“This means that patients not only lose their ability to see, but loss of their true eyes,” said Dr. Patricio Meza who is the Vice President of the Medical College of Chile.
According to Meza the victims who lost their vision were 30 years old.In 80 percent of these cases, vision damage was caused by the impact of tin or rubber projectiles on their eyes.
“We face the real health crisis, the condition of medical emergencies given the situation in recent days, in three weeks, we get the highest number of cases involving serious ocular complications due to shots in the eyes,” said Meza.
The demonstration in this Chile country was triggered by economic inequality and prices.Initially the community protested the subway tariffs and expanded into a bigger movement with a list of demands related to the large gap between the poor and rich in Chile.
Demonstrators call for reforms in many sectors ranging from health services, education, and pension systems.
Since a month before, the angry Chilens see the behavior of a handful of elites from rich families who live luxuriously in the midst of the suffering of residents to social and economic gaps.
This demonstration also made around 700 people arrested by police and 23 people died.
President Sebastian Pinera revoked the emergency status declared in the middle of a massive demonstration there. However, demonstrations continue.
