Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) case is still a major concern in
Indonesia
.Although they can attack anyone, children are said to be far more vulnerable to experiencing severe conditions when exposed to this disease.
Chairman of the National Vaccination Program Sri Rezeki Hadinegoro, explained, one of the causes was the difference in the composition of body fluids between children and adults.
“If we lose more than 10 percent of fluids, adults can still survive. But for children, it has entered severe dehydration,” Sri said in the inauguration of the active monitoring of dengue vaccination in Jakarta held by the Ministry of Health, Monday (29/9).

Sri stressed that loss of fluids in children can make blood thicker. This condition inhibits blood flow and reduces the supply of oxygen throughout the body.
“Oxygen is one of our lives. If it is reduced, children can collapse, unconscious, even seizures,” he explained.
In addition to physiological factors, children also often have difficulty expressing the symptoms they feel.According to Sri, children aged five years and over may have been able to discuss, but often they are still hiding or denying complaints. This makes early detection more challenging.
As a prevention effort, the government together with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) began to roll out dengue vaccination in elementary school children (SD).The QDENGA brand vaccine will be given to graders 3 and 4 elementary school children with two doses, three months away.
This program involved nine puskesmas and 106 schools with a target of 15 thousand children.Health monitoring is also carried out in 10 hospitals, including RSUPN Dr.Cipto Mangunkusumo, Tebet Regional Hospital, to Pasar Minggu Regional Hospital.Monitoring will last for three years to assess the effectiveness of the vaccine to a decrease in inpatient rates due to dengue.
Not only in South Jakarta, a similar program is also run in Palembang and Banjarmasin with a target of 7,500 children each. The vaccine used is a grant from PT Takeda Innovative Medicine through the collaboration of FKUI, Health Office, Academics, and Regional Government.
