In a speech broadcast on Facebook on Monday evening, Rajoelina said that at this time he had to move to a safe location to protect himself. He did not say where he was now.Rajoelina only emphasized that he would not “allow Madagascar to be destroyed.”
According to a diplomatic source, Rajoelina refused to step down from his post.
Meanwhile, a military source told Reuters that Rajoelina flew from the African country since Sunday (12/10) using a French military plane.Madagascar is a former French colony.
French radio RFI reported that he had reached an agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron, who is in Egypt for a summit with a number of Arab-Muslim countries on Gaza, said he could not confirm reports that his country had helped Rajoelina escape.
He only advised that constitutional order must be maintained in Madagascar and that although France understood the complaints of the country’s youth, these complaints should not be exploited by military factions.
Demonstrations erupted in Madagascar on September 25, initially protesting the lack of water and electricity. However, demonstrations spread and complaints increased as citizens began to oppose acts of corruption, protest against bad governance, and criticize the lack of basic services for the people.
This demonstration was initiated by the younger generation or Gen Z, as has happened in various other countries recently.
Rajoelina’s government has tried to invite young people to negotiate, but has been rejected.
Demonstrations in Madagascar became increasingly heated after the military decided to support the actions of the younger generation. On Sunday (12/10), a number of soldiers who were members of the elite CAPSAT force stated that they were siding with the demonstrators.
