English
and Portugal on Sunday (9/21) is expected to officially recognize
Palestine
as a country. This step was taken ahead of an important week at the UN General Assembly in New York, where a number of countries plan to do the same thing to pressure Israel related to the war in Gaza.
In recent months, a number of old Israeli allies have begun to change their position after Israeli military offensive in Gaza has become more intensive after Hamas’s attack in 2023. Israel’s reply caused a large destruction, tens of thousands of casualties, and a food crisis that triggered a humanitarian disaster.
It is estimated that around 10 countries will announce official recognition of Palestine in the next few days.British media, including the BBC, reported that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would convey this policy on Sunday, despite having a strong opposition from Israel.
Starmer previously stressed that Britain would recognize Palestine if Israel failed to take concrete steps towards a ceasefire with Hamas before the UN General Assembly took place. He called the recognition as an important contribution to encourage the process of peace and solutions to two countries, quoting

.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the step as a form of appreciation for “heinous terrorism” as well as “calming the ideology of jihad”.
On the other hand, Portugal through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also ensured its recognition of Palestine on Sunday. The Lisbon government assessed that the escalation of conflict was increasingly worrying, Israel’s threat to annexing the Palestinian territory, as well as the humanitarian crisis as the main reason for the decision.
Since Portugal’s announcement last July, Gaza is getting worse.Israel launched an air strike, the United Nations Monitoring Agency stated that there was a famine in parts of Gaza, and the Israeli military said it would use “unlawful power” to seize Gaza City.
Besides Britain and Portugal, a number of other western countries such as France and Canada are also rumored to be taking similar steps at the upcoming UN forum.
Israel firmly rejected the Palestinian recognition. In fact, the report said Israel threatened to annex the West Bank in response.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed that the international community should not be afraid to face the risk of Israel’s retaliation.”The world should not feel intimidated,” he said.
The Israeli-Hamas war broke out after the attack on October 7, 2023 which killed 1,219 people in Israel, most of the civilians.Since then, the Israeli counterattack has killed more than 65 thousand people in Gaza, who are also the majority of civilians, according to the data of the Gaza Ministry of Health recognized by the United Nations.
