The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) conducted joint exercises with 28 countries in the Indian Ocean region, one of which simulated the earthquake

International scale tsunami simulation exercise, Indian Ocean Wave Exercise (Iowave25), aims to test and ensure the Tsunami (Tsunami Early Warning System) early warning system and response preparedness in disaster -prone areas run effectively.
Director of Gempabumi and Tsunami BMKG Daryono said that the exercise this time focused on testing the “end-to-end” tsunami early warning chain or from upstream to downstream.

The plot, starting from the BMKG as the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC), was forwarded to BPBD, until finally it reached the community in the coastal area.
Thus, the tsunami early warning is not only issued, but also accepted, understood and followed up by the affected community.
“In Iowave25 today, we tested the most critical scenario: the magnitude (M) (M) 9.0 earthquake in the Sunda Strait Megathrust Zone,” Daryono said in a statement, Thursday (9/25).
“We want to ensure that the tsunami early warning is not only issued by BMKG as the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC), but also accepted, understood, and followed up by people in the affected coastal areas,” he added.
The potential for a major megathrust earthquake in the Sunda Strait itself has been mentioned by BMKG.
BMKG noted that currently there are two Megathrust zones that are still a threat because they have not released their great energy for a long time. These two zones are predicted to be ‘exploding’ repeatedly with a pause of up to hundreds of years.
The two zones are the Sundanese Strait Megathrust and the Mentawai-Sbert Megathrust. Both of these zones are called the Seismic Gap, namely the potential earthquake source zone but there has not been a major earthquake in tens to the last hundreds of years.
In 2024, Daryono said that these two Megathrust zones were “just waiting for time” to break.Even so, it is not known exactly when the Megathrust zone will shake the land.
“The earthquake release in the two megathrust segments may be said to ‘just wait for the time’ because the two regions have not yet been earthquake for hundreds of years,” Daryono said in his written statement at that time.
The Sunda Strait Megathrust, which has a length of 280 km, a width of 200 km, and a 4 cm shift (slip rate) per year, has been recorded as ‘broken’ in 1699 and 1780 with a magnitude of 8.5.
Meanwhile, Megathrust Mentawai-Sabarut, with a length of 200 km and a width of 200 km, and a slip rate of 4 cm per year, had an earthquake in 1797 with M 8.7 and in 1833 with M8.9.
Iowave Exercise 2025
Earthquake and Tsunami Simulation Exercise on September 25 is part of the Iowave 2025 series which will test a total of four tsunami scenarios, including September 25, 2025, the Sunda Strait Megathrust Scenario (M9.0);October 15, 2025, Pakistani Makranan Subduction Scenario (M9.0), October 25, 2025, Non-Seismic Scenarios (Volcano Fani Maore Mozambik); And November 5, 2025, the North Sumatra Megathrust Megathrust scenario (M9.2), coincided with the World Tsunami Awareness Day (World Tsunami Awareness Day).
This activity includes a table top exercise to test SOPs, communication rehearsals, to independent evacuation simulations that are important for the community.
BMKG emphasizes that tsunami early warning must be realized not only as an early warning, but also as an early action or fast response.
Therefore, the Iowave 2025 exercise also encourages people in tsunami -prone areas to carry out independent evacuation exercises, as part of an effort to realize the Tsunami Ready Community.
The community is said to be trained and understand how to respond to the tsunami warning, both sourced from the Inatews system.
“The tsunami is a low frequency disaster but high impact (high impact) that can take dozens to thousands of lives,” Daryono said.
“Inatews’s noble goal is ‘Zero Victims’ in the event of an earthquake and tsunami. This can only be achieved if all components, institutions, media, and community-solutions and trained to respond to warnings quickly, orderly, and controlled,” he said.
