Terengganu State,
Malaysia
, threatening to imprison Muslim men who do not attend
Friday prayers
For no legal reason for up to two years.
This new rule was ratified by the Islamic Party in-Malaysia (PAS) on Monday (18/8).The rule said the first violator could be sentenced to a maximum of two years in prison, a fine of 3 thousand ringgit (around Rp10.5 million), or both.
Previously, Muslim men who were absent three times in a row from Friday prayers only threatened with six months in prison or a fine of up to 1,000 ringgit (around Rp3.5 million).
The Terengganu government also stated that reminders about Friday prayers would be installed at the mosque.Law enforcement will be carried out through community reports and religious patrols from the Terengganu Islamic Affairs Department.
Member of the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly, Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, stressed that the sentence would only be handed down as a final attempt.
“This warning is important because Friday prayers are not only religious symbols, but also forms of obedience among Muslims,” he was quoted as saying by the daily news newspaper.
However, this rule gets a lot of criticism, especially from human rights activists (HAM).Director of Asia Human Rights and Labor Advocates (AHRLA), Phil Robertson, said the step was “surprising” and damaged the image of Islam.
“Freedom of religion also means freedom to not believe or not participate. Terngganu authorities openly misuse human rights with this Draconian law,” Robertson said as quoted
The Guardian
.
He urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to revoke the sanctions.
The relevant legislation was first passed in 2001 and in 2016 with the addition of more severe sanctions for violations, such as not respecting Ramadan and harassing women in public spaces.
Malaysia itself adheres to a dual legal system.Islamic law as the official religion of the state runs side by side with civil law.The Sharia Court has the authority for the personal affairs and families of Muslims, which includes about two -thirds of a total of 34 million people of neighboring country.
Pas, who controlled all 32 legislative seats in Terengganu, indeed in power without opposition. This conservative party seeks to tighten the enforcement of religious law in the four states they lead.
In 2021, the State of Kelantan also tried to expand sharia criminal law including sodomy, incest, gambling, sexual harassment, to the blasphemy of places of worship.
But the Malaysian Federal Court canceled the regulation in 2024 on the grounds of unconstitutional, a decision that triggered a massive protest from PAS supporters who demanded the protection of sharia law.
