The attitude of Belgium follows a number of United States allied countries such as France, Spain and Britain who will recognize the Palestinian state.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot stated through social media accounts X (formerly Twitter) that the decision was taken following the humanitarian disaster that occurred in Palestine, especially in the Gaza Strip.
This step is also carried out because it considers international obligations, including the obligation to prevent the risk of genocide.
“Belgium will recognize Palestine in the UN General Assembly! And strict sanctions will be imposed on the Israeli government,” Prevot wrote on Tuesday (2/9) at X.
Prevot conveyed the sanctions that Belgium will be imposed on the Zionist country includes 12 sanctions, which includes a ban on imports from Israel, a review of government procurement policies with Israeli companies, restrictions on consular assistance for Belgians who live in illegal settlements based on international law, prosecution potential, prohibitions on flights and transit, as well as the inclusion of two Israeli extremist ministers and several settlements as “non -growing personnel”.
Prevot also said Belgium would support the steps of the suspension of cooperation with Israel at the European level, such as the suspension of the Association Agreement with the European Union, the suspension of research programs, the suspension of technical cooperation, and others.
“Belgium will recognize Palestine in a joint initiative between France and Saudi Arabia. This is a strong political and diplomatic signal to maintain the prospects of the two -state solutions and to highlight the criticism of Israeli expansionist ambitions,” he said.
In the same statement, Prevot also emphasized that the Palestinian Hamas militia would also receive several similar sanctions, namely the inclusion of a number of Hamas leaders into the “Non Grata Persona” list.
Prevot also said Belgium would not let Hamas run the government in Palestine.
This prevot statement was delivered ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting which began on 9 September.
A number of countries ranging from France, Canada, Britain, Malta, Portugal, to Australia have stated that they will recognize the Palestinian state at the meeting.
