Minister of Agriculture cum-Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Andi
Amran Sulaiman
revealed that the government is preparing a large livestock development program
chicken
broilers and layers to support the Free Nutritious Meals program (
MBG
).
This step is to strengthen food security while stimulating the village economy.
Amran said that the recent increase in chicken prices was actually a positive signal of resuming economic activity in the region. He assessed that the increase was not due to supply fluctuations, but rather due to increased demand triggered by the implementation of the MBG program.

“Chicken actually causes (prices) to rise. This is good, this increase is good because there is MBG. This is the strategic program of the President (Prabowo Subianto), there is economic movement in the villages,” said Amran at the 2025 Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting, Tuesday (4/11).
He explained that the government had prepared a road map to build a national chicken farming ecosystem, covering the production of laying hens, broiler chickens, as well as logistics and marketing systems.
Development locations will focus on areas where food prices are still high in order to help stabilize prices while expanding production.
“Later we have created a program, we were ordered to develop a program to build an egg ecosystem, chicken farming for eggs and for broilers in the future. We will comb wherever prices are high. There we will build development of chicken (broiler)-laying chicken farms,” said Amran.
Based on Bapanas’ calculations, additional needs to support the MBG program reach 700 thousand tons of eggs and 1.1 million tons of broiler chickens per year.
This development is projected to create 1.4 million new jobs throughout Indonesia, especially in the smallholder livestock sector.
From Amran’s explanation, this chicken farming development program will be driven through two large ecosystems, namely laying hens and broiler chickens.
For laying hens, state-owned food company will provide them
grand parent stock
(GPS),
parent stock
(PS), feed, vaccines, medicine, to logistics and marketing.
Production of young chickens (pullets) is targeted to reach 60.27 million heads which will then be managed by breeders through the Red and White Village/Subdistrict Cooperative (Kopdes).
From there, around 54.79 million laying hens were produced with a production capacity of 1 million tons of eggs per year, of which 0.7 million tons were prepared for MBG needs for 82.9 million beneficiaries.
Meanwhile for broiler chickens, the development model is similar.Food BUMN will prepare GPS, PS, FS, feed, veterinary medicine, RPHU and meat processing facilities, as well as cold storage, logistics and marketing systems.
Production is targeted to reach 1.23 billion broiler chickens with a capacity of 1.5 million tons of meat per year, of which 1.1 million tons will be absorbed for the needs of the MBG program.
Amran added that this effort is also part of the government’s strategy to maintain food price stability and reduce inflation. He said the latest indicators show the food situation is starting to improve.
“We are involved in moving production, encouraging production so that food inflation can be controlled. But we are also grateful that rice is now deflated, in the last five years perhaps the first time there was deflation in a lean month, we call it famine,” he said.
