won’t wait.The aircraft will remain off.
However, an incident reported by
Times of Malta
shows there are exceptions if you have a direct relationship with the pilot of the aircraft.
This incident occurred on April 26, when the KM Malta Airlines flight with the KM613 number was scheduled to fly from Rome to Malta.
The short flight as far as 427 miles or around 687 km is scheduled to depart at 09.50 local time.However, just before departure, the Pilot captain was contacted by his fellow pilot colleagues, who happened to be the flight passenger.
The “special” passenger was also a former head of the pilot union, who was none other than a friend of the aircraft pilot.
He requested that the flight be postponed to give him and his family when he arrived at the airport, because they were on vacation in Rome.
The flight was postponed.The plane finally departed at 10:36, 46 minutes late from the original schedule.The plane landed at Malta at 12.00 and arrived at the gate at 12.05, 45 minutes late.
The Internal Investigation of KM Malta Airlines (KMMA) found that the pilot who requested that the delay had violated the company’s policies that prohibit staff from asking for special travel arrangements.
He also violated the rules by contacting the flight captain directly, instead of contacting the airline’s operational team.
When investigated, the pilot claimed that he asked for a delay because one of his family members was sick and needed to return home immediately.
For his actions, the pilot was subject to sanctions in the form of suspension of staff trips for three months and warning letters that will be recorded in his track record for one year.
Pilot captain who obeyed the request also received a warning letter.This punishment is considered very light, given the violations that occur.
Defense from the pilot union
A spokesman for the pilot union defended the two pilots, described it as “a model professional who will never abuse their position.”
The pilot union stated that his party would not explore the details of this case, but added that because the pilot who asked for a delay was not on duty, he basically acted as an ordinary passenger.
A union spokesman also claims that the pilot follows the company’s ethos to show concern for passengers, by “waiting for this passenger on medical basis, after evaluating that there will be no operational consequences for delay and after consulting with KMMA operational control.”
The pilot union was angry because this incident became public consumption and claimed that “this violation could have serious consequences for flight and public safety, pilot welfare, and in the end, the success of KMMA.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the same thing happened in this airline or its predecessor, Malta Air.In 2012, a high -ranking pilot at Air Malta postponed the flight for 30 minutes after arriving late with his family, and demanded that
check-in
reopened.
