Even so, nutrition doctor Johanes Chandrawinata stressed that the poisoning was not a direct side effect of shark meat.
“Poisoning is usually triggered by other factors, ranging from the freshness of fish, hygiene during preparation and cooking, cleaning utensils, food transportation processes, to consumer hygiene when eating it,” Johannes said when contacted by cartitleloansIndonesia.com, Friday (9/26).
According to Johanes, shark meat is actually safe for consumption and has long been part of culinary in various countries. Therefore, we can be sure poisoning is not due to the fish itself, but because of the processing or cleanliness of the menu served.
“In Australia, for example, there is a Fish and Chips menu with Whiting fish which is a shark meat,” he said.
In terms of nutrition, shark meat is the same as other deep sea fish. The omega-3 content in it is useful for supporting the health of the brain and heart.
However, there are things that need to be considered, namely shark meat has a high enough mercury levels. Therefore, even if it can be consumed, the portions should be limited and not used as daily food.
Especially for children, Johanes emphasizes that shark meat can still be consumed as long as not too often.
“Sharks are safe for consumption by children as long as they do not every day because the mercury content (mercury) is high,” he added.
In other words, the health risks that arise are not from shark meat naturally, but rather on how the processing and cleaning of the food itself. Then, can you eat sharks? The answer according to Johannes is of course allowed, as long as it is limited.
“Make sure the shark that is consumed fresh, is processed properly, and served with good cleanliness standards. In that way, the benefits of shark nutrition can still be felt without ignoring security aspects,” he said.
