Four Indonesian badminton legends namely Tontowi Ahmad, Liliyana Natsir, Maria Kristin Yulianti, and Sigit Budiarto were shocked and proud when their names were enshrined as the name of the Cup in
Polytron Superliga Junior
.
The four legend names were enshrined for the contested trophies in four new categories contested in 2025. The details, the Tontowi Ahmad Cup for U-13 Putra, Liliyana Natsir Cup for Putri U-13, Sigit Budiarto Cup for U-15 Putra, and Maria Kristin Yulianti Cup for U-15 Women.
Tontowi claimed he was very happy when he was told that his name would be enshrined as the name of the contested trophy.
“I don’t believe it, I used to fight for [the trophy], suddenly my name is now there,” said Tontowi.
“Hopefully it can appreciate children, can be a motivation for children to be able to excel like [the name of the figure] they are fighting for,” he added.
Liliyana also claimed to be surprised when he was notified that his name was enshrined as the name of one of the trophies in Polytron Superliga Junior.
“Shocked too, suddenly there was the Liliyana Natsir Cup. Hopefully with this trophy so you know. Which Liliyana Natsir is, what achievements, Oh Maria Kristin.”
“So introduce them to seniors, what kind of achievements and can motivate them,” said Liliyana.
In line with her two colleagues, Maria Kristin also claimed to be proud of the appreciation given to her in the form of the name of the trophy.
“The first time I was told, I would have been surprised. It’s also proud.
Sigit Budiarto is also grateful and assesses that the trophy that takes the name of this legend as a form of appreciation.
“As soon as it was given the name to be used as the name of the trophy, shocked and grateful there was also an appreciation given to us, former athletes. Proud and did not expect too,” said Sigit Budiarto.
Before the names of the four legends above, there were already four other Indonesian legends which were also enshrined in the U-19 and U-17 categories which had been contested in previous editions.
They are Yuni Kartika (U-17 Putri), Hariyanto Arbi (U-17 Putra), Susy Susanti (U-19 women), and Liem Swie King (U-19 Putra).
