Dengue hemorrhagic fever
(DHF) can develop very fast in children. Therefore, first aid at home becomes an important step so that conditions do not get worse before the child gets medical treatment.
Moreover, the DHF case in Indonesia also continues to turn alarming numbers.Until the 25th week of 2025, the Indonesian Ministry of Health recorded 79,843 DHF cases, with 359 deaths.
Of the total number, around 73 percent of dengue cases occurred at the age of 5-44 years, with the most mortality rates in the age group 5-14 years. This fact confirms that children are vulnerable groups that must receive more attention.
“DHF in children often develops rapidly. Parents must be sensitive to the initial symptoms and do not delay examination. Early detection and adequate fluid administration can greatly help prevent the condition becoming more severe,” explained a pediatrician at Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, Venty and a written statement, Wednesday (9/17).
So, what are the first aid that can be done at home when the child experiences DHF symptoms? The following steps:
1. Give adequate fluids
Children with DHF are at risk of dehydration due to high fever and vomiting.Make sure they drink lots of water, ORS, or fresh fruit juice.Fluid helps maintain blood circulation and prevent the condition getting worse.
2. Compress with warm water
Warm compresses effectively reduce heat while making children more comfortable.Avoid compresses with cold water or alcohol, because it can inhibit the discharge of body heat.
3. Use heat -lowering drugs according to the doctor’s recommendations
If the child has a high fever, it may be given heat -lowering drugs such as paracetamol. But the dose must be according to the doctor’s advice.Don’t give aspirin or ibuprofen because it can increase the risk of bleeding.
4. Make sure the child is resting enough
Children with DHF need a lot of rest so that the immune system works optimally.Make the atmosphere of the room calm, comfortable, and not too hot.
5. Monitor danger signs
Immediately bring the child to a health facility if symptoms appear such as nosebleeds, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, the body feels very weak, or fever that does not go down. These symptoms indicate the condition is serious and requires medical treatment.
