The East Java Provincial Government conducted Weather Modification Operations (OMC) to anticipate the potential for extreme weather which is expected to hit a number of regions in East Java.
The Head of East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Gatot Soebroto, said that this operation was carried out after coordination between East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
“Coordination was carried out between the Governor and the Head of BNPB, so it was decided the implementation of weather modification operations,” Gatot said when confirmed, Monday (9/15).
Gatot also appealed to the public to routinely monitor weather forecasts.Because, extreme weather has the potential to trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as flash floods, landslides, to tornadoes.
“Considering the potential for moderate to heavy intensity rain, we urge residents to be vigilant and monitor weather forecasts regularly,” he said.
Previously, East Java BPBD had set alert status in 38 districts/cities as an anticipatory step.This responded to the prediction of the Juanda Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) which said that extreme weather could potentially occur in 22 regions in East Java.
“From the East Java Province BPBD, we followed up with all the Heads of Regency/City BPBD to be on standby. The name of the forecast can change, so we alert in 38 districts/cities,” said Disaster Management Disaster Management BPBD East Java, Sriyono, in Surabaya, Saturday (9/13).
Sriyono asserted, all equipment and logistics have been distributed to the regions.Equipment such as tents, boats, to food needs have been prepared.Regency/City BPBD will also be on standby 24 hours.
BMKG Juanda predicts extreme weather can trigger disasters such as heavy rain, floods, flash floods, landslides, strong winds, tornadoes, to hail.The potential is expected to last until 17 September 2025.
At present, the East Java region is still in the dry season.But in the next week, it is estimated that there is an increase in extreme weather which has a significant impact on community activities.
BMKG explained, this phenomenon was triggered by atmospheric wave disorders such as Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), rossby waves, and low frequency atmospheric disorders.
Areas that are estimated to be affected by hydrometeorological disasters include Bondowoso, Jember, Jombang, Kediri, Batu, Malang, Lumajang, Madiun, Mojokerto, Nganjuk, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Situbondo, Magetan, Ngawi, Ponorogo, Pacitan, Bojonegoro, Tuban, Banyuwangi, and Trenggalek.
Communities in areas with steep or mountainous topography are advised to increase awareness of potential disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, slippery roads, fallen trees, and reduced visibility.
