Stopping part or all shipping services to the United States (US), after the new Washington tariff rules made international postal traffic to the country plummet of more than 80 percent.
Universal Postal Union (UPU), the postal cooperation agency under the United Nations, said that his party was developing a new technical solution so that the shipment to the US could return to normal.
“We work quickly to develop technical solutions that allow post to the United States to go back,” said Director General of Upu, Masahiko Metoki, in his official statement, quoting
AFP
.
This policy began when the administration of US President Donald Trump at the end of July announced the abolition of tax exemption for small packages that entered the US, valid since August 29.As a result, a number of postal operators in various countries such as Australia, Britain, France, Germany, India, Italy, and Japan stated that they did not accept most of the US destination packages.
Upu data shows that the postal traffic to the US on August 29 fell 81 percent compared to the previous week.Of the total, 88 postal operators reported that they had suspended shipping services to the US, both in part and in full.
They included operators in 78 UN member countries, including two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as nine other regions such as Macau and the Cook Islands.
Changes in the rules in the US place the burden of Customs Collection on the airline or the approved by the Customs and Protection of the US border. However, many airlines said they were unable to bear the responsibility, while the postal operator did not yet have a direct path to the approved party. This is what triggers a big disturbance in operations.
As a long -term solution, Upu is preparing a Delivered Duty Paid system that will be integrated into the Customs Declaration Platform. With this system, postal operators can calculate and collect duties from customers since shipping in the country of origin.
For the time being, UPU has provided a calculator of duties that can be accessed by postal operators through the software interface.
Metoki also sent a letter to the US Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio, to convey the concern of member countries related to this chaos.
According to UPU data, over the past 12 months, traffic entered the US covers 15 percent of the total global postal delivery.Of that amount, 44 percent came from Europe, 30 percent from Asia, and 26 percent of other regions.Mostly in the form of small packages, types of shipments commonly used for cross -country online trade.
Upu, based in Bern, Switzerland, was founded in 1874 and now consists of 192 countries. This institution sets the rules for exchange of international post and provides recommendations to improve services.
