The General Assembly of the United Nations or the United Nations with the majority of votes supported the non-binding resolution on Friday (12/9) which advocated a two-state solution for Israel and
Palestine
.
This resolution was passed a few hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of the formation of a Palestinian state.
Of the 193 UN member countries, 142 countries supported the New York declaration, 10 opposed, and 12 others chose abstain. The resolution proposed by France and Saudi Arabia supports the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and projects the solution of two countries.
This resolution also condemned the Hamas attack on South Israel on October 7, 2023, as well as condemning the siege and hunger in Gaza by Israel which caused the humanitarian crisis.
The resolution proposed the Palestinian Authority (PA) to govern and control the entire Palestinian territory, with the formation of the transition administrative committee immediately after a ceasefire in Gaza.
“Hamas must end his power in Gaza and hand over his weapon to the Palestinian authority,” said the declaration, while adding that Hamas must also free all hostages, as reported
Euronews
, Saturday (9/13).
In addition, this resolution suggested the placement of the UN mission to protect Palestinian civilians, provide security guarantees for Palestinians and Israel, support a peaceful transition to the PA, and monitor the ceasefire and future peace agreements.
This seven -page document condemned “Hamas’s attack on civilians” in South Israel on October 7, 2023, when the militants led by Hamas killed around 1,200 people, most of the civilians, and held 250 people hostage.Of these, 50 people are still being held hostage, including around 20 people who are believed to be still alive.

This resolution also condemned Israeli attacks on civilians and civil infrastructure in Gaza, as well as “siege and hunger that caused humanitarian disasters and protection crises.”
After the October 7th, Israeli military operations in Gaza have killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, most women and children, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
This figure, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians, is often quoted by international institutions such as the United Nations.
Most of the Gaza region has been razed to land, and more than 2 million people have been displaced. The United Nations has stated that hunger now occurs in the Gaza region, and is expected to extend to Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis at the end of this month.
This declaration calls on countries to recognize the Palestinian state as an “important and inseparable component” in realizing the solution of two countries.Without mentioning the name, but clearly refers to Israel, the document states that “illegal unilateral actions threaten the existence of an independent Palestinian state.”
Earlier this month, Belgium announced that he would join Britain and France in recognizing the Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly at the end of this month.Palestine hopes that at least 10 other countries will recognize their country, increasing the number of more than 145 countries that have done it.
The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, Riyah Mansour, stated that the majority support for this resolution shows “Longing for almost the entire international community to open the door for peace options.”
Without mentioning Israel directly, he said, “We invite those who are still encouraging war options and destruction, and trying to eliminate the Palestinian people and steal their land, to listen to the sound of common sense, the logic of peaceful settlement, and a strong message that echoes in the General Assembly today.”
