Forest fires hit the tourist area
Lake Toba
, precisely in Tongging Village, Brand District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra (North Sumatra).
The incident that occurred on Thursday (8/14) afternoon burned around 12 hectares of protected forest land.
Head of Protection, Law Enforcement, and Capacity building of the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK), Zainuddin Harahap, explained that the fire began to appear at around 15:30 WIB.
The new blackout effort was made a day later, precisely Friday (8/15) night.
“The total area that burned reached approximately 12 hectares, with the status of the land is a protected forest area,” said Zainuddin, Saturday (8/16).
Zainuddin added, the joint team faced big challenges when extinguishing fires because of the extreme geographical condition.
“The location of the fire is in the hilly area with mineral soil contours and overgrown with pine vegetation, shrub, and flammable weeds,” he explained.
Until now, the cause of forest fires on Lake Toba is still under investigation the authorities.”Not yet confirmed, still waiting for the results of the investigation,” explained Zainuddin.
North Sumatra DLHK ensures that supervision is carried out to prevent aftershocks.The joint team consisting of Manggala Agni, XV Kabanjahe Forest Management Unit (KPH), Karo BPBD, Polri, and TNI have been deployed to handle situations in the field.
“This region is one of Indonesia’s leading tourist destinations as well as an important ecosystem area that must be maintained its sustainability,” he said.
